Water Source Protection Week: The Jordan Aquifer
September 30, 2025

💧The Jordan Aquifer is one of the three sources of water used by Central Iowa Water Works to produce water for over 600,000 people across central Iowa.
💡Source water protection relates to water quality and water quantity.
‼️The Jordan Aquifer's water is very old, with estimates suggesting it could be up to 180,000 years old, making it a non-renewable resource on a human timescale.
⁉️How can we protect this source?
Water conservation practices can include:
🚿taking shorter showers
🔧fixing household leaks
🚰installing water-saving fixtures
👕washing only full loads of laundry and dishes
🌱watering lawns efficiently
🚨According to the EPA, watering an average sized lawn for 20 minutes a day for seven days is the equivalent to taking more than 800 showers!
Outdoor irrigation uses the most water in our system and can account for as much as 30% of total household water use!
