Seasons of the Rivers: Part I
February 3, 2026

The “Seasons of the Rivers: Part I” presentation by Central Iowa Water Works is part of an educational series designed to help trustees, elected officials, and community leaders better understand how source water conditions change throughout the year—and how those changes affect drinking water treatment.
Part I typically focuses on early-season conditions (late winter into spring) and covers:
o Source water dynamics
How the Raccoon River and Des Moines River respond to snowmelt, rainfall, and runoff
o Water quality challenges
Seasonal increases in contaminants like nitrate and how they begin to rise in the spring
o Treatment strategies
How facilities—especially the Fleur Drive Water Treatment Plant—adjust operations, including when and why the nitrate removal facility may be used
o System flexibility and resilience
Use of multiple sources (rivers, infiltration gallery, reservoir storage) to manage changing conditions
o What customers may notice (or not notice)
Reinforcing that despite changing river conditions, finished drinking water continues to meet all safety standards
The goal of the session is to give leaders a practical, seasonal understanding of how water moves from river to tap, so they are better equipped to answer public questions and support regional decision-making.
