Central Iowa Water Works Expands Infrastructure to Support Regional Growth
Des Moines, Iowa — Central Iowa continues to experience strong growth—and Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW) is growing right along with it.
As part of the Saylorville Water Treatment Plant expansion project, CIWW is installing approximately 4,700 feet of 24-inch transmission main to strengthen the region’s drinking water system. The new transmission main will connect to the existing feeder main at the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road and extend west along Hickman Road, tying into the existing system near 73rd Street and Wilshire Boulevard.
This critical infrastructure investment will increase transmission capacity and improve water availability, helping ensure reliable service for the rapidly developing western portions of the Des Moines metropolitan area.
“Projects like this are essential to staying ahead of growth and maintaining a resilient, regional water system,” said Tami Madsen, Executive Director. “We are committed to delivering safe, reliable drinking water to the communities we serve—today and into the future.”
Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in November 2026. CIWW appreciates the public’s patience as crews complete this important work.
